Sketches

The idea was to put the group members’ work into a real scene and I used modelling techniques to build a space. Putting this exhibition on Bensley Street. The character of the street is in keeping with what John Cooper Clarke wrote about in his poem, wet and dirty.

Members did a series of motion posters with our logo and each was named after words taken from the poem: easy, cheesy, queasy and greasy.

Statement
My role
For this project, I was the SPACE ORGANISER, responsible for recreating the scene of the Beasley Street poem as a space to present the group’s work. Towards the end of the project, I added the video production after learning about the other groups’ presentations.
Teamwork
Some of the members specialised in kinetic effects and some in graphic design. After the second group meeting, the group decided to create a set of motion posters that needed a consistent style and visual elements. But instead of getting involved in the design of the motion posters, I focused on building Beasley Street. I wasn’t actually sure if the final visual presentation was complete and in line with the poem, a decision made due to strong interest.
Dilemma
The group work progressed well and was visually pleasing in terms of the dynamic poster. I had a dilemma with modelling, as I hadn’t been working in Cinema 4D for very long, so experimentation was taking longer than I had anticipated. But the idea of moving from flat to three-dimensional was strong and it was expected that by the end of the project I would still not have mastered the software. For example, when debugging the lighting, I had to wait until the image was finished rendering to see the effect and could not see it immediately. The items in the scene did not match my requirements because I had not fully mastered the functions of the software. In order to make the scene look realistic, I rejected the more time-saving low-facet modelling. I know this is not wise, but it is my OCD. The solution was to watch tutorials and fail while trying over and over again to find the best results.
Adjustments
What touched me most was the day of crits, when I saw the other groups’ unusual ideas and realised that sound and music were so important to the audience’s experience. I searched the other groups’ accounts on ins, watched the videos they had posted and thought about how our group’s video should be presented. At the end of the project, which was already starting Project 4, I continued to revise the scenes. And learned a simple editing tutorial to adapt the static scene images into a 30-second video.
The takeaway
Working in a team helps to see the strengths of others and it is important to keep your strengths while incorporating the strengths of others. It is dangerous to only see what you like if you don’t keep up with the times and this can hinder people’s progress in their career.
