ABOUT THE PROJECT
A level of low-fidelity prototyping of a weather app for mountain sports enthusiasts.

TIMELINE

FINAL PROTOTYPE

RESEARCH SCOPE
Mountain sports include a wide range of sports and I focused on mountain biking and hillwalking for this project.

USER RESEARCH
I have very little experience with mountain biking and mountain hiking. What are the characteristics of most of these mountain sports enthusiasts and what problems do they encounter while moving around I can’t imagine, so I need a lot of real research information to design an app that helps the users.
FEMALE MOUNTAIN BIKERS ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY
- I met a female biker in the shop and made her my first user research subject.
- Although the number of female bikers is small and some of their needs overlap compared to those of men, they have higher requirements for safety. Although the number of female bikers is small and some of their needs overlap compared to those of men, they have higher requirements for safety. For example, they estimate their riding time and aim to finish their ride before it gets dark.

HILLWALKING ENTHUSIASTS
I searched for 20 posts by typing in the keyword “hiking app” on the Little Red Book app as the source of my sample. I selected a blogger with three years of hiking experience, who presented five representative apps with high scores.

RELEVANT DOMESTIC RESEARCH
- As mountain biking is a resting activity in the winter, I was unable to reach a large number of users. So I referred to Yang Jie’s paper A Study on Current Situation and Strategies of Cycling Mountain Bike Riding in Beijing.
- The relevant data from the paper was brought together in the graph below.

- For hillwalking enthusiasts, I referred to Jiang Hongyuan’s paper on the spatial perception and identity construction of hikers.
- The most moving part of the paper is the author’s collection of high-frequency phrases mentioned about hillwalkers. These phrases show content that users care about, such as beauty and natural phenomena.

PERSONAS

OPPORTUNITIES & INITIAL IDEAS
- Using filters to limit information
- Visual hierarchy
- Users group elements together
- Forecasts of natural landscapes
- Basic information and safety reminders for the route

TESTING

Users want to know about activities in the area, as well as basic information such as traffic and how many people are hiking in the area.
